Horror flick ‘Insidious 2′ tops weekend box office

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Low-budget horror sequel “Insidious: Chapter 2″ grabbed moviegoers searching for a Friday the 13th scare, winning the U.S. and Canadian box office race over The Robert De Niro comedy “The Family.”

The fright flick about a family haunted by spirits pulled in more than $41 million in ticket sales in its first three days, according to studio estimates on Sunday. That’s more than triple the opening take of the 2010 original.

About $20 million came on its Friday the 13th release date.

“The Family” — starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer — opened in second. They play a mob couple, relocated to France under witness protection.

“Riddick” dropped to third.

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” reaches an important milestone. It was fourth this weekend, passing the $100 million mark in total ticket sales.

The Jennifer Aniston-Jason Sudeikis road-trip comedy “We’re the Millers” rounds out the weekend’s top five.
