There are new reports of fake money is circulating in Maine with the Damariscotta Police Department saying its received reports of movie prop money showing up in the area.
Damariscotta Police say the bills appear genuine at a quick glance, but contains several clear indicators that it is fake, including phrases such as:
• “FOR MOTION PICTURE PURPOSES”
• “THIS NOTE IS FOR MOTION PICTURE PURPOSES. IT IS NOT LEGAL TENDER”
• “PROP MONEY INC.”
• “IN PROPS WE TRUST”
Officers say the bills are commonly sold for use in movies, photography, training, and entertainment. They say possessing prop money is generally legal, but using it or attempting to pass it as real currency is not.
Damariscotta Police are encouraging all local businesses, cashiers, and residents to carefully inspect any cash received, particularly $100 bills.
