My sister and Jenny and I traveled to Reykjavik, Iceland over the holidays. It’s been on my “bucket list” for a few years. Winter is stunning there— the weather and temps very similar to Maine. The difference is there was about 3.5 hours of daylight there—just the weirdest thing. I would snap pictures at 11 a.m., and it looked like the middle of the night.
Snowmobiling over a glacier was a definite highlight of the trip. We got picked up in a huge monster truck, and drove about 2 hours—into the snowy tundra — We rode to an ice cave, got to explore a bit, and then rode back — it was an absolute blast.
Our flight and hotel price was actually cheap – all flights, five night’s hotel room, taxes, even insurance for just under $1000 each. However, the price of food, drink, or anything for that matter was crazy expensive. One night we ate at a moderate restaurant, we each had a soup, split an appetizer, and I had a glass of wine. Jenny had water. That was it…total bill about $105 USD. I am sure you could do it cheaper –going out of the town center to eat, etc.
Definitely a quirky country and people, but virtually no crime, and they believe in helping each other. We didn’t see one homeless person or panhandler. At the same time, the entire country is only about 330,000 people. Plus, a lot of tourists. For the first year ever, 2016 saw more money from tourism than from fishing –which is a staple in Iceland.
I hope to go back -in warmer weather, so I can rent a car, do the Ring, try more hot pots (thermal baths), and get a deeper experience of Iceland.
