Here’s the poem written by Blake & Kyle’s good friend David Morris, and read at Kyle’s Celebration of Life on May 18.
WE CHOSE YOU FRIEND
We chose you friend, our family part,
We chose you friend, your subtle heart,
We chose you friend, your strength of frame,
Yet strength of soul, your brightest flame.
That shell, that hard, that fortitude,
That smirk, that bite, that attitude,
We chose you friend, saw through your act,
The deeper you, your sweeter fact.
That goo inside you tried to hide,
The compassionate man, the heart so wide,
I’ll speak your truth, your secret bare,
We chose you friend, your thoughtful care.
The days, the years and memories stack
They built and grew and bound this pack
But days can fade and minutes fleet
We chose you friend, our man complete.
But you cannot hear the tune to come,
And you cannot beat the hidden drum,
You brought us close and held us near,
We chose you friend, your heart so clear.
And what we found when all was done,
And what we knew when breath was gone,
What we saw as our brother lay
Was you chose us, not the other way.
You chose us friend, the lucky few,
You chose us friend, a truth we knew,
You chose us friend, our ties that bind
The hurt, the joy, you’ve left behind.
We had you for a moment brief,
But we could not see the coming thief,
And Time acts fast and cruelly so,
Your life gone quiet, horrific blow.
You think of words you’d like to say,
To still the grief, just one more day,
The canyons harsh, the road that’s rough
The moments had, never enough.
I ask did you know the esteem we felt,
A group so strong, but cards were dealt,
Our love can’t stop the foundations shake,
Or the pain that’s caused when units break.
The hurt inside you could not see.
You could not know, and neither we,
That day that took so much from all,
That morning dark, that dreaded call.
We stood and saw your body lain,
Your brothers huddled in shocked refrain,
Our family 8, a chance to try,
To catch our breath, our last goodbye.
You left a break, no one to blame,
This love we give, unchanged, the same.
Your piece that’s gone, the broken loop
You chose us friend, your fractured troop.
Chosen friends, our man so Fair,
We’ll bring you along, your story bear,
A heart may stop and life march past,
But Kyle, dear friend, we hold you fast.
