One Dead After SUV Hits Pickup Truck, Dump Truck in Saco

Fatality Crash - Saco Police

One person is dead after the SUV they were driving hit a pickup truck and then hit a dump truck in Saco Thursday afternoon.

Officers say the SUV was traveling southbound on Route 1 Portland Road and Waterfall Drive around 3 p.m. when it crossed the center line and hit the northbound pickup truck. They say the SUV continued traveling almost 1,000 feet further in the wrong direction and hit the dump truck.

The driver of the SUV, identified Friday as 80-year-old David Girard of Hollis, was pronounced dead at the scene. Saco Police say the driver’s identity is being withheld until relatives are notified.

The Kennebunk and Windham police departments, the York County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police’s commercial vehicle enforcement unit are investigating the crash, which led to Route 1 in Saco being reduced to one lane in both directions for several hours.
