The Make 12 Hours Count Radiothon to support the nonprofit Veterans Forward, a program of Easterseals Maine, returns to the airwaves of News Radio WGAN on Thursday.

This year, Governor Janet Mills has declared Thursday “Veterans Forward Day” in Maine.

The governor’s proclamation recognizes the sacrifices of Maine veterans and their families, highlights the assistance Veterans Forward provides when other resources may not be available, and encourages people across the state to support its mission.

The Radiothon returned in 2025 after a six-year hiatus. The broadcast is a fundraiser to support veterans and their families who have emergency needs ranging from housing to food to substance abuse.

For 12 hours, WGAN can do what radio does best — bring people together around an important Maine cause,” said Danny Martignetti, associate director of content at WGAN and Radiothon organizer. “We want to share veterans’ stories, show listeners the difference Veterans Forward makes every day, and give people a direct way to help.”

The 12-hour broadcast will feature a rotating panel of hosts including Jon Shannon from WGAN sister station WPOR.

Maine Congressional members along with candidates running for congress and governor of Maine will join the radiothon as well. They include Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, and Representatives Chellie Pingree. Republican 2nd District candidate Paul LePage will also join the broadcast, as well as all three candidates for governor – Democrat Hannah Pingree, Republican Bobby Charles and Independent Rick Bennett.

The Radiothon takes place between 6 am and 6 pm Thursday on WGAN.

The broadcast dovetails with another fundraiser for Veterans Forward, the Last Car Show of the Season.

Hot Rods and Heroes takes place Sunday between 10 am and 2 pm at the Bill Dodge Auto Group, located at 4 Saunders Way in Westbrook.

Anyone wanting to show their car will need to register on location between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., as there is no pre-registration available. There’s a $20 Entry Fee for exhibitor vehicles, with all registration fees going to Veterans Forward.

The first 300 vehicles to register will receive a special commemorative dash plaque.

Sunny weather is forecast for Sunday, although a rain date for the car show would take place the following Sunday.

More than 500 cars are expected at Hot Rods and Heroes, which will offer awards in several categories.

There’ll also be live music, food trucks and a raffle.
