60,000 Gallons of Water Used at Large Fire in Falmouth

Falmouth fire on Red Oak Drive - Cumberland Fire Department

Activity is back to normal on Red Oak Drive in Falmouth after numerous road closures were in place during an elaborate response to a large house fire Monday afternoon and evening.

Smoke could be seen from as far away as Portland from the fire, which firefighters say had spread into nearby woods.

Falmouth crews arrived on scene and found a large house set 150 yards back from the main road fully engulfed in flames.

Falmouth Fire-EMS says departments from Portland, Westbrook, and Yarmouth helped battle the fire, from which numerous explosions could be heard from Red Oak Drive.

Given the rural area, Falmouth Fire-EMS says they called in water tanker trucks from Cumberland, Windham, and North Yarmouth to assist. Additional tankers arrived from Freeport, Yarmouth, and Brunswick as well as the tankers took turns hauling water from a hydrant on Brook Road approximately 1 mile away to the scene.

Approximately 60,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire.

Central Maine Power was also brought to the scene and Falmouth Public Works sent a crew out to provide sand to the water-covered roads.

Falmouth Fire-EMS says Yarmouth Engine Company stood by as a rapid intervention company for firefighter safety on scene.

There were no injuries and firefighters say the scene was cleared by 9 pm Monday, more than five hours after crews were first called in at 3:36 pm.
