A Second Person Has Died in Connection to Last Month’s Searsmont Mill Explosion

A second Fire Fighter has died in connection to the Searsmont Mill explosion last month.

Sunday morning, Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury passed away from his injuries sustain from explosion at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Woodbury is the second death from the Robbins Lumber Mill fire, as the explosion took the life of Morrill Volunteer Fire Fighter Andrew Cross.

Woodbury was 76 years old.

In a statement on Sunday, Maine Governor Janet Mills phrased Woodbury for his bravery and service.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that Assistant Fire Chief of Searsmont, Wayne Woodbury, has died as a result of the injuries he sustained fighting the fire at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont. Wayne gave his life to protect his community, and his sacrifice and example will never be forgotten. On behalf of the people of Maine, I extend my deepest condolences to the Searsmont Fire Department, to his community and to all impacted by this devastating loss.”

The investigation into the explosion remains ongoing.
