Animal rights activists target Portland restaurant in campaign for people to go vegan

Animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) stopped in Portland Friday as part of a broader effort for people to go vegan.

The group parked it’s “Hell on Wheels” truck outside the Hot Suppa restaurant on Congress Street, with the truck covered in images of chickens going to a slaughterhouse and playing recorded sounds of chickens crying, alongside a subliminal message every 10 seconds suggesting people go vegan.

“These animals, just like every other animal, has the same desire to live freely of abuse and exploitation just like we do” PETA member Wendy Fernandez told CBS 13. “And with the abundance of vegan food available at every grocery store, nearly every restaurant, there’s no reason to continue selling or consuming the body parts of tortured animals,”

The group also visited Bangor for a similar protest the next day. In response, Pepino’s Mexican Restaurant in Bangor says they’ll be offering half off on chicken burritos and dry rub chicken.

On their website, PETA states that they operate “under the simple principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”. The group has come under fire over the years for multiple reasons, including their views on euthanasia, linking dairy to autism, and criticizing late TV personality/zoologist Steve Irwin on what would’ve been his 57th birthday.
