Maine Wildlife Park in Gray is reporting the death of its black bear named “Luvey.”
The Wildlife Park says the bear had been behaving normally with no signs of illness or distress, and suddenly collapsed and passed away within minutes on Wednesday.

The Park says Luvey had lived there since 2021 after the wildlife facility where she had lived closed. “A beautiful cinnamon-phase black bear, she quickly became a favorite among visitors and staff alike,” the Wildlife Park said in a statement.

Maine Wildlife Park says a veterinary necropsy will be performed to help determine the cause of her death.
The bear had reportedly been raised in human care and could not be released into the wild, but “found a permanent home here where she helped thousands of visitors connect with and learn about Maine’s black bears and the importance of wildlife conservation,” the Wildlife Park said.

“Luvey will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of caring for her. We know Luvey was loved by many, and we appreciate the kindness being shown to the staff who cared for her,” said Wildlife Park.
