Maine utility regulators have approved new rates for Central Maine Power customers.

Beginning on July 1, a typical customer using 550 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month will see a total increase on their bill of about $4.91.

In a statement, Commission Chair Philip L. Bartlett said “These rate changes reflect our statutory obligations and are primarily driven by costs that have already been incurred or approved, including those that support the state’s energy and climate policy goals. This year’s net increase is driven primarily by storm recovery costs.”

To reduce the impact of rate increases, some storm-related costs will be recovered over a two-year period instead of one.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission says the increase is also driven in part by Maine’s climate and clean energy initiatives.

The commission says customers can take advantage of resources available through Efficiency Maine, along with state and federal agencies to help manage energy costs.
