Three Cumberland County deputies are on administrative leave after they shot a 57-year-old Harrison man who they say shot at them.

Police say they were called to a home on Hawk Ridge Road Wednesday when Arthur Lefebvre threatened to hurt himself, but they say Lefebvre shot at them when they arrived.

They say Lefebvre was uncooperative, was armed and fired multiple rounds at law enforcement.

Deputies say they learned other family members were in the residence and at risk. They say they continued to try and communicate with Lefebvre but were not successful.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, Lefebvre finally came out of the residence and confronted deputies with a gun. Deputies say three of their rank then shot and injured Lefebvre.

They says he suffered serious injuries and was taken on a helicopter by Lifeflight to Maine Medical Center where he is being treated. They say his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this point.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Office of the Attorney General will be investigating the use of deadly force by law enforcement. The underlying criminal conduct will be investigated by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The three involved deputies will be placed on administrative leave as is standard protocol in these incidents. The identities of the involved Deputies are not being released at a later time.
