The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says several police agencies, including Portland Police, are receiving reports of a scam involving jury duty.
The scam features a person posing as a Lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office who tells people they have missed or are requested to report for Jury Duty.
Cumberland County deputies say law enforcement agencies are not responsible for selecting or schedulung people for jury duty.
Ther’re advising the public to never hand over personal information or transfer money or gift cards to avoid penalties associated with jury duty.
Anyone who gets a call, text message or social media correspondence threatening a fine, arrest or other sanction involving jury duty is advised to abruptly hang up.
Anyone who gets such a call or anyone who has any questions about the scam is advised to contact law enforcement.
