Drought Gets Worse Across Maine Impacting Drinking Water

U.S. Drought Monitor

The drought in Maine is getting worse, with about 93 percent of the state now under severe or extreme drought conditions.

The only portion of the state under less intense conditions is far northern Aroostook County, which is under a moderate drought.

Drought conditions across the state have worsened over the past week, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The continued deteriorating conditions follow the 6th driest summer in recorded history in Maine

The unusually dry conditions are affecting the drinking water supply, with several systems in Cumberland, Franklin, Oxford, Somerset, Washington, and York Counties are reporting drought-related water challenges.

Also, private wells remain at risk as 306 households have reported dry wells or muddy/discolored water so far this year.

“The Maine CDC Drinking Water Program suggests that both public water system customers and private well owners practice water conservation measures such as limiting non-essential water uses, such as lawn irrigation, and only running full loads of laundry and dishes,” said Cybersecurity and Resilience Coordinator for the Maine CDC  Joshua Laufer.
