Planned Parenthood of Northern New England claims the Trump administration is withholding essential reproductive health care for tens of thousands of people in Maine and New Hampshire.

Planned Parenthood was notified Monday of a freeze of Title X funds, which provide money for birth control and other non-abortion services.

Title X offers services to uninsured and low-income people, and Maine receives roughly $2 million of the program’s funding per year,

The administration says the money is being frozen over possible civil rights violations and President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting diversity, equity, and inclusion and “taxpayer subsidization of open borders.”

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England claims it served more than 6.400 Title X patients in Maine last fiscal year, which accounts for 61% of total patients across its four health centers in Biddeford, Portland, Sanford and Topsham

Title X funds support services, including birth control, contraception education, cancer screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and HIV services, and wellness exams, including pap tests. It was enacted in 1970.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England CEO Nicole Clegg attacked Elon Musk and the Trump administration in a statement released Tuesday.

“The fact that Elon Musk, DOGE and the Trump administration are trying to take away this care speaks to how deeply disconnected he is from the lives and needs of Mainers, Granite Staters and all Americans,” said Clegg. “Politicians should not be deciding whether the people in Maine and New Hampshire or anywhere else in this country can get the birth control, cancer screenings or other essential health care they need.”
