The report from the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry shows central and coastal Maine are nearing peak color heading into the weekend, with leaf drop ranging from 70 to 100 percent.

State fall foliage spokesperson Gale Ross has declared it “Maine’s Weekend”, as a perfect time to take a drive, hike, or bike ride to view the colors with fewer crowds..

Among the major attractions this weekend is the Gear Again Festival in Brunswick.

The following is the fall foliage event list from MaineFoliage:

  • Gear Again Festival Oct. 18: Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy this community gear swap event hosted by Maine GearShare in Brunswick. The day features live music, food, and sustainable recreation programming that encourages reuse and responsible outdoor adventure.
  • Mount Desert Island Marathon Oct. 19: Runners from around the world travel to Maine for this scenic marathon and half-marathon that winds through Acadia National Park and along the island’s rugged coastline.
  • Last day of the season at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Oct. 19: Celebrate the final day of the season at Boothbay’s award-winning gardens. Visitors can enjoy late blooms, vibrant fall foliage, and peaceful trails before the gardens close for the year.
  • OgunquitFest Oct. 24-26: Looking ahead, this beloved seaside festival features a craft fair, classic car show, ghostly tours, and a children’s Halloween parade in the heart of Ogunquit.
  • Harvest on the Harbor Oct. 30 – Nov. 1: Maine’s signature food and drink festival invites everyone to experience the state’s culinary talent with opportunities to taste Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition dishes, sip spirits from Maine Distillers Guild, as well as Maine wines and beers, and slurp oysters from over 30 growers from up and down the coast.
  • Scenic road trip idea Maine’s coastal byways: For a final foliage road trip, explore Maine’s stunning coastal routes – the Schoodic National Scenic Byway, Bold Coast National Scenic Byway, and Acadia All-American Road. Each offers a different take on Maine’s maritime beauty, from the working harbors and quiet villages of the Schoodic Peninsula to the dramatic ocean cliffs of the Bold Coast and the sweeping vistas of Acadia National Park. With fewer crowds and lingering color, these drives capture the best of coastal Maine in late October.
