Update: Fire Damages Home, Destroys Barn in Augusta

Fire destroyed a barn and damaged a home in Augusta on Monday.

The city reported the fire near 238 Church Hill Road around 9:30 a.m.

There were no injuries reported.

Due to high fire risk, Maine Forest Rangers called in a helicopter to drop water on the fire, including nearby grass that was burning.

A detour was put in place while crews battled the blaze.

UPDATE:

The initial investigation indicates the fire began while an person was working on a generator next to the residence.

While attempting to start the generator, a spark ignited the fuel, and the fire spread to the nearby home and barn.

The fire has been determined to be accidental.

Two firefighters were injured during the incident.

One Augusta firefighter was transported to a local hospital for a medical event and remains under evaluation. A Sidney firefighter sustained a minor injury, was treated at the hospital, and has since been released.
