First Maine Snowstorm of Season to Bring 3-6 Inches in Portland Area

The first plowable snow event of the winter season will hit Eastern and Central Maine tomorrow. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 7 am Tuesday until 1 am Wednesday.

Accuweather meteorologist Joe Lundberg says the upcoming storm will not be followed quickly by more snow.

“I think we’d have to turn our attention to sometime, maybe later next week,” said Lundberg. “But nothing big in the is in the offing. This will be the biggest one that we’ve seen so far this winter, obviously, and it will be for the next week or so across the area.”

Lundberg says the system won’t drop much snow in the Western Maine mountains but will definitely hit the Portland area with 3-6 inches.

He says there’ll be light snow starting tomorrow morning, which will build up by noon and be heaviest tomorrow afternoon and evening.

The heaviest accumulation will likely be in some inland areas to the southwest, where there could be 10 inches.

Lundberg says it won’t be followed by more snowfall for a while, but that doesn’t mean the snow on the ground is going to be melting anytime soon.

“This is not going anywhere, because I think temperatures are going to be stuck in the 30s for the rest of the week,” Lundberg said. “In fact, Friday, it’s probably in the low to mid 20s. There’s a blast that some really cold air comes in from the north and west.”

Lundberg says temperatures in Portland and the region will stay below normal averages for at least a week after tomorrow’s storm.

He says the next snowstorm for the area is likely more than a week off.
