Hallowell to Hold Stephen King Day

The city of Hallowell is holding “Stephen King Day 2025” next month to honor the Maine native and legendary author of horror novels.

The city says the gathering on Saturday, May 17th, will have dramatic readings and ghost tours, King-themed pub trivia and a Carrie-themed 21+ prom, among other things. 

Organizers say most events are free or low-cost, with proceeds supporting local causes including the Hubbard Free Library.

They’re calling it a celebration to honor one of Maine’s most famous storytellers in Stephen King.

The events at Stephen King Day 2025 are listed below:

  • 9:00 am – Animal Kingdom Costume Pet Parade at Hubbard Free Library: Witness adorable pets showcasing their most creative and eerie Stephen King-inspired costumes – prepare for some howlingly good fun!

  • 10:00 am – 3pm (Drawing at 3:00 pm) – Stephen King Book Raffle at Legion Hall: Enter for a chance to win a collection of frightful prizes and expand your Stephen King library.

  • 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Overlooked Pages Book Dives at Hubbard Free Library: Delve into the fan-based discussions of a selection of King’s works: Pet Semetary, Misery, Dolores Claiborne, It, The Shining, The Gunslinger, The Stand, Carrie

  • 10:00 am – 4:30 pm – Kingtastic Book Fair at Legion Hall: Browse a wide selection of Stephen King novels, related books, and creepy crafts from local vendors.

  • 11:30 am – Dark Tower Paint Party at Michel Paul Artist Studio: Unleash your artistic side and conjure your own terrifying or evocative scenes inspired by Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower series.

  • 2:00 pm & 7:00 pm – Reader’s Theater: The Reach at Gaslight Theater, City Hall: Experience a live, haunting performance of Stephen King’s chilling novella, The Reach, brought to life by talented local actors.

  • 11:00 am – 3:00 pm – KING Character Gallery & Button-Making at Gallant Therapy Services: Get creative and craft your own buttons featuring beloved (or most terrifying) characters from Stephen King’s iconic stories.

  • 2:00 pm – Grave Secrets & 6:30 pm – Granite City Ghost Tours with Kennebec Creeps & Crawls: Uncover the spectral secrets and chilling history lurking in Hallowell’s historic streets with spine-tingling guided tours.

  • 3:00 pm – Stephen King Pub Trivia at Burano’s Wood-Fired Pizza: Test your knowledge of King’s vast universe over delicious food and drinks for a chance to be crowned the ultimate Holder of All King Knowledge.

  • 5:30 pm – Castle Rock Rising Costume Contest at Legion Hall: Don your most terrifying, creative, or character-accurate Stephen King-inspired attire for a chance to win a $100.00 cash prize.

  • 8:00 pm – Carrie-Themed 21+ Prom at Easy Street Lounge: Dance the night away at this uniquely eerie prom experience – be prepared for a potentially messy evening! (Must be 21+ to attend).
