A hiker has been hospitalized after a tricky rescue effort was conducted at Falmouth’s Blackstrap Hill Preserve Friday morning.

Falmouth Fire Chief Howard Rice Jr. told the Bangor Daily News that the fire department and emergency medical services responded to a call around 10:39 a.m. and were able to speak with the injured hiker and their hiking companion over the phone before attempting to reach them.

Responders hiked about 2 miles into the trail system where the injured hiker was located but were unable to transport them out of the preserve because of flood conditions. The patient was transported to an ambulance around 12:57 p.m. and taken to a local hospital.

The hiker’s condition is unknown at this time.
