The ICE agent who shot and killed a Colombian man in Biddeford last week is reportedly in protective government custody.
David Brouillette was identified as the man who shot and killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero on July 13.
According to the Portland Press Herald, court documents show that the biological father of Brouillette’s stepdaughter said Brouillette told him he had left his home to enter protective custody.
The father also asked a judge to give him temporary full custody of their daughter out of fears over threats made against Brouillette and what he’s since learned about his history of violence.
The judge rejected the father’s request Thursday, saying it relied on media reports and court records describing claims of violent behavior by two of Brouillette’s ex-wives and one of his daughters.
The Department of Homeland Security has refused to identify Brouillette, but his ex-wife said that he had called her in the days after the shooting to tell her he shot Guerrero in self-defense.
DHS says the agent killed Guerrero in the interest of “public safety” and that Guerrero had weaponized his vehicle against agents.
DHS confirmed that Guerrero was not the person being sought for an arrest warrant that day.
An investigation into the shooting involving DHS and the Maine Attorney General’s Office is underway.
