A jury is now deliberating the case of Aziayh Scott, who is charged with manslaughter for the death of 22-month-old Quayshawn Wilson in May of last year in Thomaston.
Closing arguments took place on Monday, where Scott’s defense said the state’s case was circumstantial with no direct evidence that Scott assaulted Wilson.
Scot has claimed the toddler died from injuries sustained by emergency personnel, who mishandled CPR to revive the child, who was found unresponsive in a Walmart parking lot.
The state says Wilson’s injuries were so severe that they could not have been caused accidentally, and Scott was the only person with the child the afternoon he was injured.
The state called the claim that somebody else could have hurt the child while performing C.P.R. utterly absurd.
Scott was living with the child and the mother in Thomaston at the time of the death. The mother, Shaneka Washington, did not testify in the case. The Midcoast Villager reported the mother sent a letter to the court in November of last year. saying the state is falsely accusing an innocent man.
The jury did not reach a verdict on Monday and will continue deliberations on Wednesday, as Tuesday is the Veterans Day holiday.
Scott is on trial in Knox County Superior Court.
