Lewiston Passes 10pm Curfew for Minors After Gun Concerns

Lewiston will have an earlier weekend curfew for minors after a unanimous vote to adopt the policy by the city council Tuesday night.

The Sun Journal reports the new curfew hours are from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, which is two hours earlier than the previous midnight start.

The new policy comes after two juveniles were stopped for current curfew ordinances and police found guns on them.

People against the rule say the change will strain relationships between kids and police while those in favor hope the curfew will help address youth-centered gun violence.

Lewiston Police held a news conference over the summer after a wave of gun-related violence.

The city’s police chief says the change is minor and notes data compiled by his staff shows 36 curfew violations since 2020.

According to the Sun Journal, city ordinance violations could result in a civil summons issued to the minor’s parent or guardian, and a fine could be imposed.

There are exemptions in place such as when a minor is accompanied by their parent, is working for an employer, or is participating in a school activity.
