Maine’s Attorney General says 11 police officers were justified when they shot at a man who led officers on a chase last May.
The Attorney General’s report says officers opened fire on Gary Porter based on a “series of inaccurate beliefs” after he slipped out of his cuffs and stole two police vehicles before crashing one of them into a ditch in South Paris.
Officers believed Porter had opened fire when a deputy shot out their own back window, which was mistaken as gunfire directed at them.
The object believed to be a gun in Porter’s hand was actually a cellphone.
Porter survived the shooting.
