Maine’s Department of Education says it will not be signing on to a certification of Title VI compliance with the U.S. Department of Education.

Maine’s education department issued a notice to the state’s school districts on Thursday, saying it would not sign the certification, which would tie them to the Trump administration’s guidance on DEI that deems the practice illegal.

The federal government says Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on color, race or national origin for programs that receive federal funding.

Maine’s Department of Education responded by saying it’s already complying with Title VI.
