A federal audit has revealed that Maine made more than $45 million in overpayments to groups that offer support services for children with autism from 2019 to 2023.

The Inspector General’s Office for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service says Medicaid services were offered to children who hadn’t undergone complete assessments.

The Inspector General says Maine has agreed to correct the issues and reimburse the federal government for its share of the funding, which is nearly $29 million.

It comes as Maine Republicans call on the state to do more to investigate fraud.
