Maine Mall shooting suspect makes first court appearance

The suspect in Wednesday’s shooting in the Maine Mall was arraigned on Friday.

Police say 20-year-old Ahmed Basheer Awad turned himself in at Cumberland County Jail around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officers say Awad wanted to turn himself in so there could be a “safe and peaceful resolution for all involved”. They say they worked with Awad, through a third party, to make the arrest.

Awad is charged with two felonies, elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and one misdemeanor, carrying a concealed/threatening display of a weapon.

Police say the gun has not been recovered.

Award had his bail set at $250,000 in court on Friday.

His defense claimed that Awad acted in self-defense and argued for a lower bail amount.

CBS 13 News reports Awad was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in 2023, although it was dismissed when he pleaded guilty to another charge.

He also pleaded guilty in 2023 to violating the conditions of his release and paid a $300 fine.
