Maine Reps. Golden, Pingree blast “big, beautiful” bill passed by House

Democratic Reps. Jared Golden and Chellie Pingree voted against the tax package President Trump calls the “big, beautiful bill” that passed in the House by just one vote.

In a statement Thursday morning, Rep. Pingree called the bill “reckless”, saying it represents the ultimate betrayal of hardworking families:

“The richest 10% will see their wealth grow, while the poorest 10% will see their budgets shrink even further. If it’s signed into law, it will represent the single largest transfer of wealth in U.S. history.”

Rep. Golden also blasted the bill, saying it takes healthcare away from the poor and borrows trillions of dollars to fund tax cuts for the rich.

“The House GOP had every opportunity to work across the aisle to write a budget that put middle-class families first. Instead, they’re ramming through an extreme agenda that takes health care away from the working poor and borrows trillions of dollars to fund a package of tax cuts tilted in favor of those at the top,” he said. “Mainers want more health care, not less. They want a tax code where everyone pays their fair share.”

The bill proposes an $800 billion reduction to Medicaid to fund defense spending, the hiring of additional border agents, and construction of a southern border wall. It also eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay.

The bill heads to the Senate next, where lawmakers could make changes.
