Maine’s iconic red snapper hot dogs are set to undergo a recipe change following the FDA’s recent ban on Red No. 3 dye in food. The ban, prompted by health concerns including cancer risks, will take full effect in January 2027.

W.A. Bean & Sons, the Bangor-based company that produces these bright red hot dogs, has assured fans that the flavor will remain unchanged despite the new recipe. The company is already working on a formula that eliminates the controversial dye while maintaining the signature snap and taste.

Sean Smith, Director of Sales and Marketing at W.A. Bean & Sons, emphasized the company’s commitment to adapting and continuing its long-standing tradition. He reassured consumers that the beloved red snappers will still be available, albeit with a slightly different hue.
