Major Cold Snap Headed to Maine, But What About Heavy Snowfall?

There’ll likely be 2-4 inches of snow on the ground heading into the next work week Monday, but the biggest weather event ahead will be really cold air.

“There’s a little wave of low pressure that develops along the front, and that’ll move through the area, or by the area Sunday night or first thing Monday,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Joe Lundberg “And then the arctic comes on in, and it’s going to be brutal pretty much for all next week across the area.”

Lundberg says we’ll see overnight lows in the single digits and possibly below zero if conditions are right next week.

It’ll be the coldest weather in Maine in the past couple of years, according to CBS 13 News.

Meanwhile, there’s been a very little snow across the state so far this winter. Lundberg says the pattern thus far has channeled snowstorm to the south of New England. But he says that trend could change toward the end of the month as the arctic air moves out.

“It’s still going to be cold as we wrap up the month of January,” Lundberg said. “But I think after that, as we go to February, the storm track becomes more active, and we may have some opportunities for some snow or wintry weather moving forward.”

Portland has received about a third of the snowfall it normally gets by this time during winter.
