The  Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating after a 37-year-old Corinna man was reportedly shot while trying to drive a stolen front-end loader through a house.

Deputies say a resident of Upper Notch Road in Garland called 911 at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to report a person stealing a large front-end loader from a gravel pit near their home.

The resident, who was not identified, then said the loader was attempting to drive through their home and was destroying vehicles in their driveway. Deputies believe the resident then left their home and fired shots into loader.

At that point, the loader reportedly fled the scene, drove away through a field onto a “woods road” and was next spotted by a 911 caller on 6:10 a.m.

Deputies say they tracked the loader down on Center Road in Charleston, where the operator identified at Michael Thompson of Corinna, surrendered without incident and told them he had been shot.

Officers say Thompson was taken to a hospital, and upon release, was arrested and taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

It’s not clear what, if any, Thompson’s injuries were from gunshots, or what, if any, charges he faces.

In a statement, deputies said an investigation remains active and additional charges may be pending.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Maine State Police.
