More Maine races headed for recounts, ranked choice tabulations

Some state House and Senate races will be decided by ranked choice voting after none of the candidates received a majority of the vote in last Tuesday’s election.

Ranked choice tabulations are underway for the race in House District 58, which covers towns including Belgrade, New Sharon and Mount Vernon.

Tabulations will also start for Maine Senate District 4, which includes Bradford, Charleston and Corinth.

The ranked choice process is expected to finish by the end of the week.

A recount will also take place for a Senate District 30, which covers Gorham and part of Scarborough.

That recount will begin on Monday.

A recount in House District 49, which covers Arrowsic, Georgetown and West Bath, will begin next Thursday, June 25.

Another recount for House District 135, which includes part of Kennebunk, will take place next Thursday as well.

That as the ranked choice tabulations in the Democratic and Republican primaries for Maine governor and the Democratic primary for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District are ongoing.

It comes the same day the Maine GOP released a statement claiming that a thumb drive containing election results from Tuesday’s primary was lost in transit.

The Maine GOP said Tuesday the thumb drive contained election results from Biddeford, and paper ballots were being shipped to Augusta to be recounted.

In a statement, Maine GOP Executive Director Jason Savage put the blame on ranked choice voting and Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows:

“We’ve seen it time and time again, Ranked Choice Voting delays results, and Maine voters deserve better than this.”

Her office has not responded to the claims.
