There’s now a new passenger platform at the Wells Transportation Center, which will support expanded train service in the Greater Portland Region for travel north and south between Wells and Brunswick.

The new platform will add access to trains on both sides of the double tracks in Wells, which will be connected by elevators to an overhead pedestrian bridge.

The new system will allow Amtrak Downeaster trains operating in different directions to board and disembark Wells passengers at the same time.

The project is expected to be complete by the fall of next year.

It was organized by the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA). Once complete, the project, in conjunction with signal upgrades, will enable Amtrak to operate an additional Downeaster round-trip between Brunswick and Wells scheduled to provide southern Maine commuters with car-free workday access into the Greater Portland region.

This first aspect of the project, adding a “double track” or 6 mile extension of the 2-mile passing track in Wells, was completed in December 2024. It was funded by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) and CSX Transportation.
