Northern Light Seeks Mediation in Anthem Negotiations

Northern Light Health says it’s seeking mediation in an effort to solve its negotiation breakdown with Anthem.

Northern Light cut off talks with Anthem in mid-August after the insurance company refused to increase reimbursement payments to the hospital group.

In a statement, Anthem said it is also in agreement to bring in a mediator for the next step in negotiations.

Northern Light doctors and support services will be out-of-network in October if an agreement is not reached, which will significantly raise costs for people insured through Anthem.

Hospital-based services will be out of network on December 31, although emergency care will continue to be covered regardless of contract status.

Northern Light’s current contract with Anthem expires at the end of September.

Patients can go here for additional information and details on alternative insurance plans that Northern Light Health accepts.

Northern Light executive vice president and chief financial officer James Rohrbaugh issued a statement Tuesday afternoon:

“We cannot predict whether mediation will be successful should Anthem agree to this process, but it is the right thing to do as we continue to prioritize the best possible outcome for our patients,” said Rohrbaugh. “We hope that Anthem will agree to mediation.”

Northern Light operates a network of hospitals throughout Maine.
