Person Rescued After Falling Through Ice in Winthrop

Water rescue - Winthrop Police

Winthrop Police say a person who fell through the ice while trying to rescue a dog was pulled to safety Thursday with help from a neighbor and first responders.

Officers say a person had gone through the ice off the shore of a lake and was calling for help.

Police say a nearby resident heard the shouts and threw a rope, helping pull the person closer to shore.

They say Police, fire, and EMS crews arrived in under two minutes and worked to warm the person, who was then taken to a hospital.

They say the outcome could have been different without community support and proper training, equipment, and resources of emergency departments.
