The political group ‘No Labels’ is accused of misleading voters and getting them to unknowingly enroll into the political party in an attempt to get on the ballot.

Some people say they believed they were signing petitions, not joining a new political party.

Knowing which party voters are enrolled in could be important. According to CBS 13, changes are being made to Maine’s voting system that would require voters to be enrolled in the political party of the candidate they want for the presidential primary.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows warns voters that they must be enrolled in the party of the candidate they want 15 days before the primaries. If No Labels doesn’t get a candidate on the ballot for the 2024 presidential primaries, voters in that party would lose the chance to vote on a candidate.

Founding chair of the No Labels Party, Joe Lieberman, says he’s surprised by the allegations because the cards used to enroll in the party are clearly labeled.

In order for No Labels to get on the ballot in Maine, the party would need at least 5,000 enrolled members. The Secretary of State’s office reports sending out around 7,000 letters informing voters of their enrollment to No Labels.

Members of the new party can expect to receive their letters this week or next.
