NEWS RELEASE

Portland Parking Ban Extended:

Citywide Parking Ban in Effect 10:00 PM Sunday, February 16 Through 6:00 AM Monday, February 17

PORTLAND, Maine – The City of Portland is extending the citywide parking ban to cover Sunday night as well. A Citywide Parking Ban will be in effect beginning at 10:00 PM Sunday, February 16 through 6:00 AM Monday, February 17. Vehicles left on city streets after 10:00 PM Sunday night can be towed at the owner’s expense.

  • Residents already in snow ban parking areas should remain in these lots and garages throughout the day Sunday and during the ban tonight. This will allow crews more room to clear snow and ice.

  • Please remember the priority towing times for the downtown district.

The Following is the unedited news release from the City of Portland regarding the Parking Ban declared for Saturday Night, February 15th:

PORTLAND, Maine – The City of Portland is declaring a Citywide Parking Ban beginning at 10:00 PM Saturday, February 15 through 6:00 AM Sunday, February 16. Vehicles left on city streets after 10:00 PM Sunday night can be towed at the owner’s expense.

  • The City is calling for a ban on Saturday night into Sunday due to the fact that this storm is expected to bring several inches of heavy snow as well as sleet and ice, and therefore it will be important for our plow crews to be able to remove the ice before it sets and freezes in place.

  • There is a good chance a parking ban will be needed on Sunday (Feb 16) night as well. We will make that determination Sunday morning and send out another alert. Residents should remain in snow ban parking areas throughout the storm and not move their cars by 7AM Sunday. If there is not a parking ban on Sunday night, residents should move their cars once the storm is over.

  • For those dining out or attending a show Saturday night, please View a map of the downtown district (yellow zone) with a list of priority towing times.

Winter Operations Reminders

SIDEWALK SNOW REMOVAL REGULATIONS

  • The City’s sidewalk snow removal ordinance requires business owners to remove snow and ice from sidewalks abutting their property 12 hours following a winter storm, and residential owners to clear snow and ice abutting their property 18 hours following the end of a storm or when the City finishes snow removal operations, whichever is later.

  • Business owners who fail to remove snow and ice within these time frames risk facing a $250 fine for the first offense, $500 for the second offense within the same winter season and $1,000 for any subsequent offense within the same winter season. Additionally, should the city have to remove the snow and ice or arrange for its removal, the property owner will be charged for the cost of removal plus a 10% charge for administration.

  • Residential owners can be fined $75 for the first offense, $125 for the second offense in the same winter season and $250 for any subsequent offense in the same winter season. Like business owners, should the city have to remove the snow and ice or arrange for its removal, the property owner will be charged for the cost of removal plus a 10% charge for administration.

  • View a map to see which sidewalks the City clears. Note:  The map has been updated since last winter.
