Rep. Jared Golden optimistic about Canada tariffs despite economic concerns.

While many in Maine are wary of new tariffs levied against Canada by President Trump, one person who isn’t is Representative Jared Golden.

With Canada being responsible for 70% of Maine’s imports, many economists say that the 25% tariff levied on Maine’s northern neighbor on Saturday could have many detrimental impacts on everything in the pine tree state, from electricity and oil to lobster and wood products.

However, the Bangor Daily News reports that Golden, a Democrat representing Maine’s second district, praised Trump’s decision and said that Americans need to bear higher prices to boost domestic manufacturing.

“We can incentivize job creation and manufacturing while leveling the playing field and rebalancing our trade,” Golden said. “These tariffs are also a leveraging tool to help crack down on the deadly flow of fentanyl into our country.” He also added that Trump’s move pushes back on “decades of free trade and globalization that prioritized low prices above all else.”

This is in contrast with District One Representative Chellie Pingree, also a democrat, who said the tariffs will only drive-up costs for hardworking Americans and make it more difficult for businesses to stay competitive, especially in rural Maine.
