A man accused of leading police on a chase on I-295 was killed when his vehicle crashed into the woods Saturday night in Cumberland.

Maine State Police say Troopers stopped 34-year-old Jacob Brown of Scarborough near mile 16 southbound in Yarmouth after reports of erratic driving.

Police say Brown stopped but then fled before veering off the roadway and crashing into trees, causing his vehicle to catch fire.

Brown, an assistant principal at Scarborough High School, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was ejected from the vehicle.

The crash is still under investigation, but police say speed and alcohol were factors.

Scarborough School Superintendent Diane Nadeau announced Brown’s death Sunday and said there would be no regular classes or vocational programming Monday.

A letter to families said students would be welcomed at 10 a.m. with the day being intentionally designed for students and staff to come together for support as needed.

After-school activities were set to take place as normal, but without any attendance being taken at Scarborough High School.
