A school board member in Livermore has resigned over a new gender policy in the school district.
The board had recently voted to recognize two genders in Regional School Unit 73 in Livermore.
CBS 13 reports that director Brian Riley sent in his resignation letter, saying that the policy is one of the reasons for stepping down, as well as health issues.
Other people in the school district say that this decision feels abrupt.
“There was no outreach, no testimony from affected students or their families, and no real attempt to understand the harm this decision could cause,” Linda Dean, a Livermore resident, said in a quote given to WGME.
She also claimed that outside influence was why this board voted the way it did.
Dean also says that the community was not involved in the decision.
