The Maine Warden Service is investigating a snowmobile crash that killed a 17-year-old girl in the Aroostook County town of Washburn.
Wardens say a 17-year-old boy was driving the snowmobile with the girl as a passenger Saturday afternoon when he failed to make a turn in the road and struck a curb, which flipped the snowmobile and ejected both people.
They say the two teenagers struck the side of a house after being ejected. which killed the girl instantly and seriously injured the boy.
He was first taken to CARY Medical Center, then later taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical in Bangor.
Wardens say the crash is an active investigation, and the names of the teenagers are being withheld.
The crash took place at 1:00 Saturday afternoon on Story Street in Washburn. Wardens say the snowmobile was traveling at a high rate of speed when it failed to make a 90-degree turn in the road.
Both victims were wearing helmets.
The Maine Warden Service was assisted at the scene by Presque Isle EMS, Presque Isle Fire and Rescue and the Presque Isle Police Department.
