South Portland Restaurant Heavily Damaged by Fire

South Portland Fire Department

There are no injuries, but a South Portland restaurant has heavy damage from a Sunday night fire.

Firefighters say they arrived at the Makoto Sushi Bar and Grill at 448 Cottage Road, and located the fire originating in the kitchen ceiling exhaust hood system.

They say the fire was extinguished quickly, but there was heavy damage to the kitchen and roof, and the business will likely stay closed for an extended period for repairs.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

Crews were called to the fire scene at 8:37 pm Sunday.

South Portland Fire Chief Phil Selberg praised the response effort. “Early notification from the automatic alarm system, combined with the quick response by South Portland and mutual aid crews, helped limit the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of all,” said Selberg.

Crews from the Cape Elizabeth and Portland Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
