The South Portland school superintendent is resigning after nearly four years on the job.
“I have decided to leave the district after substantial consideration and reflection,” Tim Metheney wrote in a letter to the community on Wednesday.
Matheney cited a difference between himself and the school board as part of his decision to step down.
“While I have deeply treasured my time leading the School Department, I have determined that at this point the Board should have the opportunity to identify a new leader who is more aligned with them,” said Matheney.
Metheney led the South Portland district through the difficulties of COVID-19 and a school shooting threat.
He mentioned efforts to eliminate the director of mental and behavioral health in his letter.
“I am deeply concerned about our students’ mental health and remain steadfast that the board should place a high priority on expert leadership in that critical area,” Metheney said.
Matheney said he has no future career plans at this time.
He started as superintendent in July 2021 and will leave on December 6.
