A 75-year-old man was rescued early Saturday morning after breaking through the ice on Echo Lake on Mt. Desert Island.

According to a statement by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the man drove a rented U-Haul truck 450 yards onto the lake before breaking through 5 inches of ice at around 4:45 am. He was able to climb to the top of the truck and call 911 and was rescued before submerging.

Authorities say the man was not under the influence of alcohol or any other substances and seemed confused and unaware of his surroundings. His identity has not yet been released to the public.

Later in the morning the truck completely broke through the ice. A salvage company is working to remove it from the lake, though they’ll have to wait till the ice can support their equipment.
