The University of Maine says funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been temporarily paused as an investigation continues into the school’s transgender athlete policy.

The school said Tuesday that an email which appeared to originate from the USDA directs the department to temporarily no longer issue payments or authorize any other releases of funding to Columbia University or the University of Maine system.

The school says the pause is temporary while the USDA investigates possible violations of Title VI or Title IX, which prohibit the school from discriminating based on race and sex.

The University of Maine says it’s responded to communication regarding the Title IX compliance review but was unaware of a review pertaining to Title VI.
