Maine’s utility regulators have voted in favor of rules restricting spending by utilities on political activities.
The new rules approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday also restrict spending on advertising and some education initiatives, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Under the new rules, electric, gas and water utilities will have to file annual reports detailing their political activities, charitable contributions, educational spending, and other activities.
It comes after supporters of a 2021 ballot measure to build a hydropower corridor that would run through Maine spent $24 million.
