PORTLAND, Maine — Maine broadcasting legend Bud Sawyer, whose remarkable radio career spanned five decades and included many years at WGAN and WPOR, has died at the age of 94.
For generations of Mainers, Sawyer was a familiar voice on the radio, entertaining listeners, delivering local programming and becoming a trusted part of their daily routines.
Sawyer joined WGAN in October 1962, beginning a significant chapter in the station’s history. In 1963, he was named program director while continuing his duties as a morning announcer.
During his years at WGAN, Sawyer helped shape the station’s popular “Rainbow Radio” format, which featured a wide variety of music and emphasized the personalities behind the microphone.
His work extended beyond the studio. In 1966, Sawyer helped coordinate WGAN’s coverage of the Friendship Sloop Races, bringing reports from the water to listeners across Southern Maine.
Sawyer also worked alongside longtime Maine broadcaster and newsman Mike Audet. Their successful morning radio partnership became a familiar part of Portland broadcasting, continuing during their later years at WPOR.
Following his years at WGAN, Sawyer continued his career in Portland radio, eventually becoming one of the best-known voices at 101.9 WPOR.
Listen:
In 1994, Sawyer was inducted into the Maine Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to Maine radio and the broadcasting industry.
Beyond his accomplishments on the air, Sawyer was remembered for his kindness, his devotion to family and the respect he showed others.
In a tribute shared by WPOR, Sawyer’s son, Mark, recalled his father’s simple philosophy:
“Just smile at someone; it doesn’t cost a penny.”
It’s a fitting reflection of a broadcaster whose impact extended far beyond the microphone.
Sawyer’s legacy remains part of WGAN’s history and the rich tradition of local broadcasting in Maine.
He is remembered by his wife, Jan, his family, friends, former colleagues and generations of listeners who welcomed his voice into their homes.
WGAN extends its condolences to the Sawyer family and joins the Maine broadcasting community in remembering a legendary voice.
