Auburn Police say charges are expected after a 40-year-old woman crashed her SUV on Main Street Sunday just before 1:30 p.m.

Officers say Rachel Walton was driving a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 northbound when she lost control and drove off the roadway, crashing through a light post, a metal barrier fence, and several trees before landing approximately 30 feet down the embankment adjacent to the Little Androscoggin River.

They say the vehicle never made it into the water.

Police say Walton suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the crash and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment and further evaluation.

Officers say speed and distracted driving were likely a factor in the crash. Walton also had a suspended license at the time of the crash.
They say the crash is still under investigation, with charges expected. Main Street was shut down for just over an hour while the vehicle was removed.
